Although the unpredictability of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Championship Series in Houston 3 continued, some patterns are emerging. We’ll dive into the numbers and work out some 2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross tips for RMFantasySX.com on January 30th.

  1. Houston 3 did not have any new top 5 finishers. Because of this consistency, there are now five drivers who have been in the top 5 at least twice in three laps – Justin Barcia, Adam Cianciarulo, Ken Roczen, Eli Tomac and Cooper Webb. These five drivers form a solid base for your RMFantasySX Top 5 for Indy 1.

Ken Roczen leads.

  1. Ken Roczen was in the top 5 in all three rounds. No matter what, he should be in your Indianapolis 1 top 5.
  1. Amazingly, Roczen is also the only driver with two podiums in the three opening laps. Even though Roczen has more podiums than any other driver, he has yet to win.

2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross Tips - Roczen and Webb# 2 Cooper Webb pursues Ken Roczen.

  1. None of the drivers on the Houston 3 podium stood on the Houston 2 podium. Not only does no driver have any kind of winning dynamic, but no driver even has podium dynamics. Justin Brayton finished P3 in Houston 2 and dropped back to P10 in Houston 3. Worse still, H2 P2 finisher Dylan Ferrandis dropped to P12 in H3.
  1. In all three laps only two drivers were in the top 8. We have already established that Roczen is one of them. The other is Malcolm Stewart, who went 5-7-6. I had Stewart on the P7 Wild Card at H3 and I missed her by one position – along with a lot of other people.

2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross Tips - Adam CianciaruloAdam Cianciarulo performs.

  1. I’ll pick a fourth new winner of the season for the fourth round in Indianapolis. Roczen was understandably unhappy when he got into H3 after docking four points for jumping on the Red Cross flag in chaotic conditions on the first lap at H2. Roczen overtook Webb on lap 3 and it looked like Roczen would take the win. Roczen held the lead for 23 laps. However, Webb made one last lap push and Roczen was stopped by Lapper Dean Wilson. That was enough to give Webb an opening, and Webb turned the opportunity into a victory. Roczen was visibly angry after the race and didn’t try to hide it on the podium. Look for the episodes of the last two races to give Roczen the motivation to win Indianapolis 1.
  1. To fill out the I1 podium, I’ll go with the last two Main Event winners. Webb is on a 4-1 run and Tomac is 1-5. It’s not an easy phone call, so hunch is what counts. Tomac is a reliable bounce back driver so I pick him as P2 behind Roczen at Indy 1, with Webb rounding the podium in P3.

2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross Tips - Justin BarciaJustin Barcia

  1. Barcia and Cianciarulo thus occupy the other two top 5 places. Barcia has been more consistent so far and scored higher than Cianciarulo, giving Barcia P4. Cianciarulo could be a risky choice as he finished in the top 5 only once in consecutive races in his 450SX career in Oakland and San Diego last year. Regardless, no one is clearly a better choice than Cianciarulo, so he gets the P5 nod.
  1. Let’s recap my Indianapolis 1 top 5 in order:
    1. Ken Roczen

    2. Eli Tomac

    3. Cooper Webb

    4. Justin Barcia

    5. Adam Cianciarulo

2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross Tips - Webb and RoczenCooper Webb looks at Ken Roczen.

  1. A good crowd gushes below us ready to destroy my picks. Justin Brayton, Malcolm Stewart, Dylan Ferrandis and Marvin Musquin all have a top 5 result. In fact, all but Stewart have a podium for their names. Stewart is the most consistent among the viewers, although the persistence outside of the top 5 in the RMFantasySX league doesn’t matter much – it’s the top 5 or broke.
  1. The wild card for I1 selection is P12 (updated on January 29th). Our first choice, Dean Wilson, was injured in a training accident. The other two P12 finishers this year are Cianciarulo and Ferrandis – I wouldn’t use either of them for P12. Wilson is something of an oasis in this final position so it will be an underdog choice. Go with Broc Tickle, Joey Savatgy or Benny Bloss. My choice will be Tickle.

2021 Indianapolis 1 Fantasy Supercross Tips - Tomac LeadsEli Tomac leads.

  1. The big shock of the year was the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team. At last year’s Monster Energy Supercross season finale, the team with Zach Osborne, Jason Anderson and Dean Wilson stood on the podium. This year the same trio has not yet achieved a top 7 result and is 10-12-13 in the overall standings. Only Osborne was in the top 10 in all three races in 2021, although P9 is his best result. Anderson was a reliable top 5 finisher last year. In 2021, Anderson went 15-8-8. It’s really confusing and they have some evidence to do to get into my top 5 as the season progresses.
  1. Marvin Musquin is the only driver who is doing worse and worse on every lap this year. While everyone was bouncing up and down, Musquin went 3-6-13. If you are far behind in your supercross fantasy lead, Musquin is a high risk choice that could pay off. Otherwise, it will have to move in the right direction before being considered a smart top 5 pick.

Adam Ciancairulo

  1. Among the drivers in all three main events, only Cooper Webb improved on each lap. His 9-4-1 load is impressive. He’ll likely be a solid podium for a while.
  1. My performance at RMFantasySX.com over the past week hasn’t been great, so I’m well below my top one percent target. At the moment I’m in the top 32 percent. I have a lot of room for improvement in the chaotic 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Championship Series. As it stands, we’re still waiting for patterns to develop.
