2021 was another busy one for mergers in the restaurant industry. From Capriotti's Sandwich Shop buying Wing Zone in January to Jack in the Box purchasing Del Taco in December, there were still a few weeks to go.

One year ago, NPC International's summer 2020 bankruptcy was the most significant M&A story. This resulted in 2021 Q1 sales by Wendy's and Pizza Hut units, to Flynn Restaurant Group, Wendy's parent, and Delight Restaurant Group.

Fat Brands was the company with the most significant moves in 2018, having acquired four restaurants chains in 2021, after purchasing Johnny Rockets in 2020.

Squarespace acquired reservations platform Tock from Restaurant Technology in March. Sweetgreen purchased Spyce in August.

Multiconcept operator JAB Holding Co. gathered its early daypart brands under one platform in August. This was the largest transaction of the year. Panera Brands announced in November that it would be returning to the public markets. Restaurant Brands International also announced in November that it would add Firehouse Subs into its portfolio.
