INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Jay Wilson soaked up the moment as his restaurant filled with customers during his lunch break.
“We’re just blessed to be here,” he said. “We are blessed that the community supports us and we just feel loved by family and friends. Our reputation got us so that here we are and here they are. “
It’s a grand reopening that’s been going on for more than a year after a fire destroyed the Mississippi Belle Southern soul food restaurant in October 2019.
Wilson talked about some of the toughest moments on the way back to recovery.
“Rebuilding, not knowing if my help would come back (and]), I’ll find help,” he recalled. “To actually open the doors today and here we are only a few minutes and they are streaming in, the phones are ringing. It’s like we haven’t missed a beat. “
Customers Donald Weaks and Cal Wilson can confirm this. “Today is the first day so I’m excited to be here for this,” said Wilson.
The Detroit native recognized the restaurant as one of his favorite Indianapolis introductions.
It’s “one of the first places I was recommended when I first came to Indy, so I gave it a try and have been happy ever since,” he said.
“I was the first person (in line) but I let a lady in first,” said Weaks.
As a regular at Mississippi Belle, Weaks says his favorite waitress, Lakisha McReynolds, knew his order before he even got out of his car.
“A lot of my customers see their faces (and) I know what they’re eating,” said McReynolds. “It was a year and a half ago. I’ve been waiting for it. I miss this.”
A large chunk of the orders placed during the Mississippi Belle reopening will tell you that the fan favorite is the fried chicken. The macaroni and cheese, vegetables and sweet potatoes were popular side dishes during the first lunch break in the store.
According to Wilson, established customers will notice different decorations inside.
