Indianapolis 500 operates with 50% fan capacity on the speedway

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indianapolis 500 is running with a fan capacity of 50% in August, which could reach six-figure values on the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Indy 500 has been pushed from its traditional May date due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 104th Indy 500 will be held on August 23, halfway through the traditionally biggest sporting events of the year. “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” can accommodate around 250,000 fans on the spacious speedway and leave plenty of space when the total number is limited to half.

“We are determined to race the Indy 500 on Sunday, August 23rd, and we will be welcoming fans to the world’s largest racing track,” said IMS President J. Douglas Boles. “We will limit attendance to around 50% and complete a number of other carefully considered health and safety measures.”

The IMS team works with public health officials to create a comprehensive plan of health interventions.

A fan-free IndyCar-NASCAR double header will continue at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the weekend of July 4th.
