Five people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in the largest mass shooting in Indianapolis in more than a decade

The police did not identify the suspect and did not provide any additional information as the person was a teenager.

They would not comment on CNN about what connection the suspect may have had with the deceased, although police said Sunday that they did not believe the shooting was accidental.

“Detectives do not believe that other people were involved,” said a police press release.

The shooting took place early Sunday on the northeast side of Indianapolis, police said. A youth was in critical condition after the shot, the police said.

“The removal of the alleged perpetrator of yesterday’s mass murder from our neighborhood will not bring back the senselessly lost life, but hopefully brings us one step closer to healing as a community,” said Police Chief Randal Taylor on Monday.

On Sunday, Taylor said the incident was the largest mass shooting in the city in more than a decade and appears to be “mass murder”.

IMPD officials responded to the report of a person shot just before 4 a.m. on Sunday and found a wounded teenage man, IMPD spokesman Shane Foley said.

The officers were given information that led them to another residence less than a block away, where they found five people – including a pregnant woman – dead, Foley said.

“Despite the best life-saving efforts of the medical staff, both female and unborn children did not survive,” he said. “The teenage man who was shot is expected to survive his injuries.”

Marion County Assistant Coroner Alfarena McGinty identified the victims as Kezzie Childs, 42; Raymond Childs, 42; Elijah Childs, 18; Rita Childs, 13; Kiara Hawkins, 19; and Hawkins’ unborn baby.

The police did not announce a motive.

“Taking an entire family out like that … I just don’t get it,” neighbor Vicki Pinkston told CNN subsidiary WTHR.

She said she recently dropped off baby items for the expectant mother.

“I had just given them a few things from my great-grandson when he was born, but he’s bigger now. The baby was supposed to be born next month,” Pinkston told WTHR.

Mayor Joe Hogsett said Sunday the city had worked for a decade to “combat the deadly confluence of guns, drug abuse and poverty that has pushed our city’s homicide rate to historic highs.”

The city had 215 criminal murders in 2020 – most in one year, according to an Indianapolis Star analysis of crime statistics.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, the suspect’s status was incorrectly stated. The suspect was arrested. CNN has not confirmed whether the person was charged.
