INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – IndyCar veteran Charlie Kimball will return to the series with AJ Foyt Racing for two races in May, the team announced on Thursday.
The 35-year-old Californian will attempt to qualify for the Indy Grand Prix on May 15th at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway street circuit and May 30th at the Indianapolis 500. Kimball, a diabetic, will drive the No. 11 Chevrolet and is sponsored by Tresiba, a long-acting insulin.
“I’ve never raced at Indianapolis without a Novo Nordisk and to be able to return this year with the support of the legendary AJ Foyt, Larry Foyt and everyone at AJ Foyt Racing is sure to be special,” said Kimball.
Kimball will be Foyt’s third driver, along with French Sebastien Bourdais and Canadian Dalton Kellett. Kimball has started the 500 for the past 10 years and qualified as the best 14-year-old in 2012 and 2015. His highest spot in 2015 was the third in a five-year period in which he had four top 10 finishes.
Kimball has six top-three finishes and eight top five finishes in 155 career IndyCar starts.
“It’s great to have Charlie and Novo Nordisk back for May,” said team president Larry Foyt. “It’s been great to work with both of them through the challenges of 2020 and I’m glad we can continue the program.”
