MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) – The personal graduation celebrations for colleges across Indiana begin Friday. For many schools, this is the first time in more than a year that these celebrations have taken place.
Now the 2020 and 2021 graduates will attend the opening ceremonies in person. However, there are many safeguards in place for pandemics.
At Ball State University, the school follows state and local health guidelines with a series of smaller graduation ceremonies outdoors in the Scheumann Stadium, rain or shine.
Graduates are limited to four family members or friends who can attend. Guests must have a ticket, wear a mask, and sit in a capsule with their group. Graduates and guests also follow social distancing guidelines, wear face coverings, and the venue is refurbished between each ceremony.
For people who can’t make it to graduation in person or are uncomfortable, Ball State University offers all of the ceremonies live online.
“Really focus on why the graduates and their families are there. So that they can have their moment on stage with their diploma and celebrate their success. We will maintain these health and safety protocols but will be as close to normal ceremonies as possible under these conditions, ”said Geoffrey Mearns, president of Ball State University.
Mearns takes pride in the graduates and school who got to this point and views personal opening ceremonies as a sign that they are well on their way to resuming a traditional academic experience on campus for students and staff.
“There is a lot of excitement and a lot of hard work going on to make this happen. Given the number of ceremonies and the added logistics, all of us who work at the university are delighted and proud and grateful that we can do this for our graduates and their families, ”said Mearns.
Ball State encourages all attendees and participants to plan ahead, arrive early, and then follow the directions of the officials who will be managing the flow of traffic. The gates open an hour before each ceremony. The schedule for the ceremony is as follows:
