The Indianapolis Fire Department investigates a large fire on Indy's west side

INDIANAPOLIS – Investigators are investigating what caused a massive fire on the west side of the city on Saturday morning.

The fire occurred on Washington Street near Addison Street just before 7:30 a.m. The Indianapolis Fire Department said when they arrived the house was already completely engulfed. The fire then spread to an adjacent business suite that had been empty for years, according to firefighters.

Several city blocks were closed to traffic as firefighters fought the flames from all angles. IFD says they are not sure how the fire started.

Witnesses in the area say empty house fires are becoming more common in their neighborhood. According to the IFD, it is best to call the police if you suspect someone is entering an empty property.
